With a sewing machine, fabric dye, and a few metres of cotton, she began making summer dresses.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>She taught at the local junior school in the mornings and sewed at night. In the afternoons, she collected me from kindergarten, and together we laid out her small collection at a street market.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Within a year, she had hired her first employee and opened a boutique on Main Street, next to the National Gallery.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"kv-about__row kv-about__row--flip\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"kv-about__story-media\"><picture class=\"kv-picture \"><source srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.karivarah.com\/wp-content\/themes\/karivarah\/assets\/brand\/about-story-two.avif\" type=\"image\/avif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/staging.karivarah.com\/wp-content\/themes\/karivarah\/assets\/brand\/about-story-two.webp\" alt=\"Lydia and Panashe together in a market stall hung with brass lanterns.\" width=\"1348\" height=\"1011\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"><\/picture><\/div>\t\t\t\t<div class=\"kv-about__words\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"kv-about__h\">Real community ties<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"kv-about__body\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Every weekend, I begged my mother to take me with her to the boutique. I spent countless hours watching her tailors cut, sew, and embroider, and many more visiting local artists in their workshops.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>As the boutique grew, so did our world. We travelled through South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana, and Zambia, exploring markets together and building relationships with artisans along the way.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>More than 20 years later, the boutique still stands. When I moved to Norway in 2021, I carried a piece of it with me and named it Karivarah.
